INGROWN AND FUNGAL NAILS
Ingrown toenails can be very painful and hinder your day-to-day activities. This can be caused by a nail cutting into the corners of your toe, trauma, or they can be something you were born with. Taking antibiotics will help clear a bacterial infection if present, however, it will not eliminate the pain you are experiencing as the nail spike is still cutting into the skin. Whether this is your first time experiencing an ingrown toenail or whether it is a recurring issue for you, the nail can be surgically removed permanently or temporarily under local anaesthetic.
This same procedure can be conducted for patients with hard-to-treat nail fungus, in which other conservative options are unsuccessful. When a fungal nail infection occurs, the fungus resides underneath the nail plate on the skin of the nail bed. When the nail plate is removed (temporarily or permanently), a topical antifungal cream can be prescribed to clear the underlying fungal infection.
WART EXCISION
Warts are an infection caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and they live on the surface layer of the skin using your blood supply to thrive. There are many options to help treat plantar warts, but for those stubborn lesions that just do not seem to clear, a more aggressive approach may be necessary. A wart excision involves surgically cutting out the wart under local anaesthetic and applying a chemical to kill any remaining virus at the base of the lesion. Since warts are on the surface layer of the skin, this technique produces minimal scar tissue.
INJECTIONS
Neuromas are swelling or enlargement of nerves due to entrapment between bones in the feet, typically between the 3rd and 4th toes, resulting in inflammation of the nerve. An alcohol sclerosing injection is a technique that can be used to “shrink” the nerve preventing it from being compressed between the bones. This technique generally requires multiple injections over the course of 5-7 weeks.
Other inflammatory disorders, including Plantar Fasciitis, Gout, Tarsal tunnel syndrome, can be treated through corticosteroid injections. Corticosteroid injections help to reduce the inflammation and can be conducted up to a maximum of 3 times a year in one location.
